What is a virus?
- Viruses are modifications to software which are designed to do harm to your system, get information from you, extort money from you, or use your system resources.
- A virus enters your system because you downloaded software (or even simple files) which contain code that does a bit more than expected. It is relatively easy for this software to mutate itself and attach to other programs, making it difficult to catch.

- In most cases, this antivirus software will detect problems during a file download.
- However, new variants of viruses occur daily and may not be in the virus database when you download the file.
- The next line of defense is a regular scan of your compter with the latest antivirus software. If a virus enters your system before it is in the database, it will be caught as soon as it is in the database.
